Malaysia's business confidence indicator returned to positive territory for the third quarter of 2026, reaching 5.9% after a negative 1.8% reading in the previous quarter, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.
The improvement was not uniform across the economy. The industry sector's indicator rose to 8.2% from negative 3.7%, while construction moved to 4.1% from negative 9.5%. Wholesale and retail trade also returned to a positive reading, at 1.2% compared with negative 7.5%.
Services remained positive at 5.2%, although that was below the previous quarter's 6.2%. The national improvement therefore should not be read as an acceleration in confidence in every sector.
Sentiment is not realised growth
The quarterly survey measures expectations. Its confidence indicator summarises selected net-balance responses; it does not mean GDP, sales or profits have already increased by 5.9%.
For businesses, the results provide a useful starting point for assessing sentiment alongside actual production, sales and employment data. A positive survey reading is not a guarantee of future orders or investment returns.
The report separately covers expectations for July to December 2026. That six-month measure should not be confused with the quarterly confidence indicator reported here.
